Nokia

Are you familiar with this phone? Have you ever own this phone before? Nokia 3310 was my first hard-earned handphone in year 2002. Nokia 3310 was one of the most successful Nokia phone & everyone (at least my friend) always jokingly said you could use Nokia 3310 to hit crab because of its size. I'm unwilling to abandon it, because of this, it is sitting in my store room now.

My second phone was Nokia 6020, but I've accidentally dropped it few weeks ago. Read about it here. After surveying for few weeks through internet & handphone shop, I decided to buy Nokia phone. Am I loyal to Nokia? Sony Ericsson, HTC, iPhone, Motorola has never crossed my mind. Hehehe.

Coincidentally, thru friend, I came across someone is willing to let go her Nokia E72. This phone was like brand-new except some scratches on its screen. The most attractive part is it still has 8 months Nokia warranty. Quickly, I grabbed this unit. I love this phone so much as it can sync email, facebook, youtube & appointment. I'm still a loyal Nokia user since year 2002.

Motorola Droid X vs iPhone 4

If you are iPhone fans, you would have noticed iPhone 4 has antenna issue. Read here. Read also here. Motorola, by any chance, give a jab to iPhone, besides promoting his Motorola Droid X, a new phone based on Google Android.

Motorola 1st jab on iPhone 4.
"And most importantly, it comes with a double antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just about anywhere to make crystal clear calls.”

And Apple iPhone hit back by this
iPhone4 Antenna

Motorola 2nd jab on iPhone 4.
"At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly. That’s why the DROID X comes with a dual antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket. For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years."

Don't you think this is creative advertisment? Let's wait for iPhone to response.

In the mean time, if you are touchscreen fan & blackberry fan, you may think iPhone like blackberry interesting. Blackberry 9800 bold with touchscreen capability, cool. Read here.

iPhone jailbreak is legal

Are you iPhone fans? If you are, it is probably a good news to you.

Now, you can buy iPhone from any where in the world, google iPhone jailbreak & slot in your sim card. Don't you think this is a good news? Good bye Malaysia exclusive carrier, Maxis & Digi.

Wiki stated that AirAsia will commence this route on 7th Dec 2010. Click here.

AirAsia To Offer ¥14,000 Malaysia-Japan Flights

KUALA LUMPUR (Nikkei)--Budget Malaysian carrier AirAsia Bhd said Tuesday that it plans to launch its first flights serving Japan by the end of the year, selling one-way tickets between Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo for as low as 14,000 yen.

Operated by AirAsia X, AirAsia's long-distance airline, the flights between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Tokyo's Haneda airport will begin at a pace of three per week. But the company aims to ramp up to seven flights as soon as possible, AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes told The Nikkei.

The flights are expected to use Airbus SAS' A330 aircraft. The Japanese government has already allotted landing and takeoff slots to AirAsia X at Haneda.

At present, the cheapest round-trip airfares for Japan-Malaysia flights sell for more than 40,000 yen. Saying that the one-way fare for its flights will likely cost less than a cab ride from Tokyo to Narita International Airport, Fernandes expressed his confidence in the service's success.

The CEO sees the flights attracting passengers in Malaysia as well, pointing out that Japan is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination among people in Southeast Asia. The company hopes to also launch service between Malaysia and other major Japanese cities, such as Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka, Fernandes added.

Since beginning full-scale operations in 2002, AirAsia has grown sharply by offering low-cost flights. As of the end of 2009, the company served 136 cities in a total of 18 countries and areas. AirAsia saw its passenger traffic jump 24% to about 22.7 million last year, topping Singapore Airlines Ltd.'s roughly 16.3 million to become the biggest airline company in Southeast Asia.

Weekend breakaway to east coast

Together with a university buddhist friends, we headed to Sg. Lembing. The Friday night was young & 300km travel to east was our destination: peaceful town named Sg. Lembing, Pahang: A town formerly known for its tin mining. By the time we reached Sg. Lembing at 1:45am, we were totally exhausted. I'm not young anymore :-(

The guest house that we booked was in tip-top condition. In a blink of seconds, we called it a day. Time past and we woke up at 5:30am to start our day, tasted the infamous Sg. Lembing beancurd. The smooth & fresh beancurd & Sg. Lembing noodles filled up our empty stomach. At 6:30am, we took 4WD to rainbow waterfall, our first destination of the day.

Half way through the bumpy ride to waterfall, we managed to see sea cloud as though we were in heaven. After 1 hour ride, we started our jungle trekking to the waterfall. Walking ups & downs the jungle for about 45 minutes, we reached rainbow waterfall. I will let the pictures do the talking.

We played water with our fellow friends & had maggi instant noodles & milo while enjoying the scenic rainbow waterfall. After 10:30am, we climbed up waterfall to view circle (360 degree) rainbow on the water. Unfortunately, we did not have waterproof camera, hence we were not able to capture the beautiful rainbow.
Coincidentally, Bomba had their rescue practice & we were able to have a shot with the colourful helicopter. (When they practice, many trees fell down as the wind was too strong. Unfortunately, I forgot to captured the devastation.)

In the evening, we went to Teluk Chempedak for beach walk & Pak Su seafood for our dinner. Nothing much to comment about these 2 destinations. Normal seaside & acceptable seafood dinner.

On Sunday, we woke up at 4:30am for Panorama Hill hiking. I could assure you that there were more than 300 hikers today. Unfortunately after our one hour hiking, we were not able to see sea cloud & sunrise. The weather was not in good condition. Luckily we saw it yesterday on the way to rainbow waterfall. This was the weather at Panorama Hill today.
After spending some time at Panorama Hill, we headed down the hill & cleaned up. We visited Sg Lembing Museum, hanging bridge, Charas Cave & had a sip at Kemaman coffee on our way back to complete our journey.

We are back to hustle and bustle city.

Stop Outsourcing and Create American Jobs Act of 2010

Protectionist US moves worry Indian tech firms

New delhi: Indian exporters of software and related services are seeking to tap an expected increase in technology spending in the US, their biggest market, but concerns of protectionist barriers in the world’s largest economy are still rife.

Late last month, Congressmen Gary Peters, Tim Bishop and Jerry McNerney proposed another legislation to curb outsourcing to countries such as India. Called the Stop Outsourcing and Create American Jobs Act of 2010, the Bill aims to discourage US firms from shipping jobs overseas.

“Outsourcing has contributed to unprecedented job losses in my home state of Michigan over the past decade,” Peters said in an email on the rationale for the legislation.

Indian software exporters have been hopeful of receiving a boost from the US recovery from recession that prompted US clients to slash technology spending. Industry body Nasscom has forecast that exports would rise to $57 billion (Rs2.65 trillion) in the year to next March from $49.7 billion in the last fiscal.

If enacted, the legislation proposed by Peters, Bishop and McNerney would allow the US government to give preference to firms not engaged in shipping jobs overseas in awarding contracts. It deters US firms from using tax havens and creating jobs overseas by increasing civil and criminal penalties for illegal transactions involving a tax haven country, such as fraud, false claims and tax evasion.

“I don’t believe that the US government should be rewarding companies that move jobs overseas with contracts funded by American taxpayers,” said Peters, a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives. He referred to two non-partisan studies to back his argument. While the Congressional Research Service says 3.4 million service sector US jobs would be outsourced overseas by 2015, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a 2009 study that around 83 of the 100 biggest public corporations have subsidiaries in tax haven countries.

Nasscom has been lobbying with US senators and policymakers for several years now to stop any such legislation from going through.

“Any kind of Bill which penalizes IT outsourcing would lead to distortion in the globalized marketplace,” said Ameet Nivsarkar, vice-president, global trade development, Nasscom. “There have been quite a few Bills aimed at curbing outsourcing that have been introduced recently. The high unemployment rate in the US—9.5% in June—is a big challenge and the government there is trying various ways to create more jobs. But we have to see how many of such legislations are actually passed and become law,” he said.

Infosys Technologies Ltd, India’s second largest software maker, is not feeling the heat of anti-outsourcing sentiment in the US, but is keeping a close watch on the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill which yet to be introduced, CEO S. Gopalakrishnan said on Tuesday.

The Bill, being initiated by Senator Charles Schumer, is expected to focus on H-1B and L1 visas given to IT and other professionals and could possibly impose some restrictions on them. Infosys plans to apply for 3,000 visas this fiscal.

“The success of such Bills depends on (the) length to which people would go to stop outsourcing. Barring companies from participating in government contracts could be one of the ways to punish them for outsourcing,” Bala Rajaraman, a partner at consultancy Deloitte, said.

Another cause of worry for the software industry is the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act, which is on similar lines as the Stop Outsourcing and Create American Jobs Act. While the former has been passed by the House of Representatives, it is yet to be cleared by the US Senate.

“With the elections to the US Senate scheduled to be held in November, the protectionism sentiment will only rise in the months to come,” said the CEO of a leading business process outsourcing firm, who did not want to be identified.

Back to reality 2

Just realized previous post Back to Reality was accidentally uploaded with wrong image. TRW Automotive Services (TAS) was no longer in existence since 1st Feb 2010 & the sign board above should be changed to TRW-Rebadged. Below is our new identity.

TAS gave me a comfortable working environment & learning. The exposure has helped me go further. I met up many friendly & easy-going colleagues & friends here. Time past & most of TAS-ian lunch gang have left as you can see in the image.

Today, I'm still on a rough sea with 3 other lunch gangs, looking forward for a good harbour to dock. Hopefully TRW-rebadged will be on another good ship & harbour soon. Pray hard!!!
